Yes, but the requirements are stricter than anywhere else in Florida outside Miami-Dade. Broward County is one of only two HVHZ counties in the state. HVHZ projects require Notice of Acceptance product approval and missile-impact testing under TAS 201, 202, and 203 for opening protection, plus structural calculations sealed by a Florida-licensed engineer. A generic carport package sold online will not clear plan review in Broward. Buildings for Fort Lauderdale have to be engineered specifically to HVHZ criteria from the start, not adapted afterward.
Yes. Permits are issued through the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Development Services Department, and Broward County’s Board of Rules and Appeals oversees code administration county-wide. Your submittal needs engineered drawings sealed by a Florida-licensed engineer, product approval documentation, an anchoring schedule, and a site plan showing setbacks. Depending on your parcel you may also face flood zone review. Start the permitting conversation before you finalize a building size - Broward’s setback and lot coverage rules frequently reshape the footprint.
Because HVHZ engineering costs more to build. A Broward building designed for 170 mph needs heavier gauge steel, more frames per bay, additional bracing, a far more substantial anchoring schedule, and approved products with documented Notices of Acceptance. It’s worth understanding the difference rather than comparing a Broward quote to an out-of-state price.
A properly engineered enclosed steel garage designed to Broward’s 170 mph HVHZ criteria offers substantially more protection than an open carport or a tarp. Enclosed structures with impact-rated doors give you the best protection against wind-borne debris, which causes much of the damage in a South Florida storm. Open covers protect against sun and rain but do far less in a hurricane. If storm protection is the primary goal, spend the money on an enclosed, properly anchored building rather than a larger open one.
