5 Tips to Help You Get Your Creative Organizational Gears Rolling!
Storage Buildings
Whether you have just purchased a brand new storage building or you’ve had one for years, there is nothing better than having a place to store your extra stuff. However, there is also nothing worse than not being able to find or access all your extra stuff either.
A disorganized storage building can often be as frustrating as not having anywhere to store the stuff, to begin with. The last thing you want to do is to have to pull everything out of your storage building and dig through boxes looking for something. A little bit of planning ahead to make sure your storage building is properly organized. Here are nine simple tips to help organize a storage unit so that you can find what you need with ease.
Pick one box size for most, if not all of your items.
Same-size boxes help with stacking and accessibility. Medium-size boxes or plastic storage tubs are perfect. Remember, big boxes may be tempting, since you have to buy less of them, but they get heavy really easily and they can be difficult to keep items sorted.
Identify the items you may need to access to more frequently.
Carefully consider what you may need while your items are in storage, especially if you plan on storing seasonal items. Here are a few things you may need to retrieve from your storage unit more often than others.
- Winter or summer clothing
- Trip supplies (tents, sleeping bags, snorkeling gear, sleds, cookout utensils)
- Holiday items (decorations, costumes, bakeware)
- Kids toys
- Tools and hobby supplies
- Financial documents
Label each box you pack.
Be as detailed as possible with the contents. We recommend numbering them with a master list of everything in the box. Write down all of the contents of each box along with the box number on paper. This seems like a cumbersome step, but a master list becomes really handy when you need to find a specific item, especially if some of your boxes will be completely out of view. You can also create a spreadsheet or text document is you prefer.
Plan an organized layout for your storage building.
If you’re going to access your building frequently, you’re going to need to put some thought into how you pack it. Ideally, you want to put the furniture against the wall opposite your boxes to leave a path in the middle. This way, you can access boxes and furniture items without any hassle. If you need to use the space in the middle, place your most moveable items there so you can remove them with ease.
Install shelves.
Since you own your building, this is a long-term storage solution. You can place sturdy shelves along one wall of the building. This will help with organization and keep you from having wobbly towers of plastic tubs.
